According to singer songwriter Dick Gaughan, one of the musicians performing at the first Shetland Folk Festival back in 1981, ‘This Festival requires a Government Health Warning – Nobody sleeps!’
With this year’s line-up including Skerryvore it’s clear to see why.
Skerryvore Gig
Formed in 2005, Scottish folk-rockers Skerryvore have come a long way from their ceilidh-band origins on the island of Tiree.
Fusing together a mix of musical styles, everything from traditional to rock and jazz, original band members Daniel Gillespie, brother Martin Gillespie, Fraser West and Alec Dalglish have created a unique signature sound which has wowed audiences in over 20 countries worldwide.
Skerryvore’s 2005 debut album ‘West Coast Life’ was followed by their second album ‘On the Road’ in 2007 by which time Barry Caulfield and Craig Espie had joined the band. Their third album ‘Skerryvore’ was released in 2010 to critical acclaim resulting in numerous industry awards to boast of including SNMA Record of the Year 2011 and STMA Live Act of the Year 2011. Now with their fourth album, ‘World of Chances’ under their belt Skerryvore’s ‘nu-folk-rock’ fusion continues to impress.
When not touring the different corners of the globe, the band, now joined by bassman Colin Cunningham, can still be found performing in music festivals around Scotland. You’ll catch them at the 33rd Shetland Folk Festival, the most northerly festival in the U.K. between 2 – 5 May 2013.
